How Missed Compliance Tasks Become a Money Pit

Even simple compliance tasks can become a money pit when they slip under the radar. For example, every corporation in New Mexico has to file a report with the Secretary of State every other year—the biennial report. It takes 5 minutes and $25 to file the report. The trap that so many NM corps fall into is that the deadline is very easy to miss because there is no reminder that the report is coming due. Late filings are automatically hit with a $200 late fee. If you wait longer than 60 days after the deadline, your business is moved to inactive status. Then you have to pay $200 to reactivate it, plus the $200 late fee, plus the $25 filing fee. A $25 task just cost you $425. This happens a lot and the mistake tends to repeat itself because those owners still don’t set proper systems to track their deadlines.

It’s never too late to put good systems in place.
